Overview
The Snowdonia Way Low Route is the only long-distance journey that traverses the full length of the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park from south to north without requiring peak-bagging at every turn. Instead, it weaves through the deep glacial valleys, ancient oak woodlands, and historic mountain passes that have shaped Welsh culture for centuries. This is a journey of perspective: rather than looking down from the summits, you move through the landscape, looking up at the towering ridges of the Glyderau and Carneddau while walking in the footsteps of Roman legionaries and slate miners.

The Journey
- The Slate Valleys: Start in the historic market town of Machynlleth and move through the atmospheric “Moria-like” slate caverns of Corris and the abandoned quarries of Bethesda.
- Coed y Brenin & Atlantic Oakwoods: Meander through the “King’s Forest” and ancient temperate rainforests, crossing dramatic gorges and rushing rivers.
- Pass of Aberglaslyn & Beddgelert: Walk one of the most beautiful riverside paths in the UK, leading into the legendary village of Beddgelert.
- The Ogwen Valley: Experience the scale of the “Big Mountains” as you traverse the base of Tryfan and the Pen yr Ole Wen, witnessing the dramatic heart of the park from its most impressive angle.
- The Conwy Estuary: Conclude the journey at the medieval walls of Conwy Castle, where the mountains finally meet the sea.

The coldSTONE Experience
- Contextual Learning: As we move, we’ll discuss the “why” of the landscape—navigating micro-terrains, understanding mountain weather patterns, and the history of the passes we tread.
- High-End Wilderness: We balance the physical effort with quality downtime, utilizing characterful local spots and ensuring the logistics allow you to focus entirely on the journey.
- Expert Leadership: As Mountain Leaders, we manage the nuances of the unwaymarked route, allowing you to immerse yourself in the environment rather than a guidebook.
- The coldSTONE ethos: This isn’t a race to the finish. We stop for the views, we discuss the history, and we move with the mountain, not against it.
- Logistics: We take care of logistics so you don’t have to. The base trip includes camping fees, tents and mats plus some base camp equipment. If you would like greater comfort, please call us and we can talk about a higher level of accommodation.
