Overview

While the Low Route weaves through the valleys, the High Route seeks the sky. This is an ambitious, high-level journey that links the most iconic massifs of North Wales into one continuous, logical line from south to north.

This isn’t just a walk; it’s a masterclass in mountain travel. We trade forest tracks for rocky ridges and valley passes for wind-swept summits. From the volcanic heights of the Moelwyns to the glacial giants of the Carneddau, this route demands respect and rewards it with the finest views in the British Isles.

The Journey

  • The Southern Giant: Summiting Cadair Idris, the “Chair of Idris,” with its dramatic glacial cwm and towering cliffs.
  • The Rhinogs: Traversing some of the most rugged and “wild” terrain in Wales—ancient, heather-clad rock that feels truly remote.
  • The Moelwyns & Cnicht: Climbing Cnicht, the “Matterhorn of Wales,” for a breathtaking view over the Glaslyn estuary.
  • Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon): Reaching the highest point in England and Wales via a quieter, more considered approach than the standard tourist paths.
  • The Glyderau: Navigating the otherworldly rock architecture of Castell y Gwynt and the shattered summits of the Glyders.
  • The Carneddau: A high-altitude finale across the largest contiguous area of high ground in Wales, finishing with a descent into the medieval coastal town of Conwy.

The coldSTONE Experience

  • Advanced Mountain Craft: This journey offers the perfect environment to refine technical movement, micro-navigation, and weather assessment under the guidance of your instructor.
  • True Summitry: Unlike the Low Route, you will stand on the highest points of every major range in the National Park.
  • Weather Flexibility: The High Route is weather-dependent. Our ethos is about “decisions discussed as they arise”—if the summits are unsafe, we adapt the route using sections of the Low Route without compromising the adventure.
  • The Full Spectrum: You experience the total diversity of Eryri—from coastal views and hidden mountain tarns to the most imposing rock faces in the country.
  • High-End Support: Even on our most strenuous days, the focus remains on a high-quality experience. We use the best local mountain inns to ensure you recover well each night.

What You Arrange

  • Travel to and from the start (Machynlleth) and finish (Conwy).
  • Personal equipment.
  • Technical footwear: Boots with ankle support and hiking-specific soles are vital for edge-support on rocky ridges.
